How to play pickleball.
If you can hold a paddle, you can play. Six rules cover everything you need for your first open play session.
The tinted band is the kitchen, the non-volley zone. 20 by 44 feet, the same court for singles or doubles.
Serve underhand, cross-court
Serve below the waist, diagonally into the opposite service box, keeping both feet behind the baseline. One attempt per serve, no second serves like tennis.
Let it bounce twice before volleying
The serve must bounce, and the return of serve must bounce. After those two bounces, either side may volley the ball out of the air.
No volleys in the non-volley zone
The 7-foot zone at the net is the kitchen. You can step in it any time, but you can't hit a volley while standing in it or touching its line. Balls that bounce there are fair game.
Games to 11, win by 2
Only the serving side scores points. First to 11 wins, but you need a 2-point margin. In doubles, both partners serve before the serve passes to the other team.
Out, net, or kitchen violation ends the rally
Hitting out of bounds, into the net, volleying before the double bounce is done, or volleying from the kitchen. Any of these is a fault and stops the rally.
Call it fair, play it loud
Line calls are made by the receiving side, and honest calls keep open play fun. When in doubt, replay the point, and always tap paddles after the game.
